Polanski Champions Teacher Pay Raises, Exam Reductions, and Anti-Far-Right Efforts Fueled by Wealthy Donors

Green Party Leader Unveils Bold Education Proposals

Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party, has made a series of ambitious promises during a speech at the National Education Union (NEU) annual conference in Brighton. His address focused on significant changes to the education system, including increased funding for teachers, reducing the emphasis on standardized exams, and using taxes from the wealthy to support schools.

The event was a notable moment for the Green Party, as Polanski became the only party leader to speak at the conference. The NEU invited him due to his growing popularity among teacher members, according to union leaders. This appearance is part of a broader strategy to position the Greens as an alternative to Labour, with Polanski set to tour other trade unions across the country.

A Plan for Fairer Funding

Polanski emphasized the need to tax extreme wealth in the UK and ensure that this money is directed towards areas where it is most needed, such as education. He criticized previous governments for failing to provide adequate funding, stating that this has led to a “shrinking” of opportunities for young people.

He described the current state of education as a crisis, noting that schools have faced real-terms cuts since 2010. Polanski expressed concern about the future of children who may not have the same educational opportunities he did, saying it “breaks my heart” to think of their potential being limited by underfunding.

Better Pay for Teachers

One of the key points of Polanski’s speech was the promise of better pay for teachers. He claimed that the Green Party would offer a more substantial pay rise than Labour, which has pledged a 6.5% increase over three years. Polanski highlighted the inconsistency between the praise given to teachers and the lack of proper compensation.

He also called for a shift in the curriculum, suggesting that schools should focus more on teaching about the climate crisis, artificial intelligence, and media literacy. These subjects, he argued, are essential for preparing students for the challenges of the modern world.

Combating the Far Right Through Education

Polanski proposed that schools could play a crucial role in countering the influence of the Far Right. He stated that children should be “equipped” to face this challenge, emphasizing that education is at the heart of defeating extremist ideologies.

He also criticized Ofsted, calling it a “toxic, failed institution” that harms both teachers and students. Polanski advocated for the abolition of Ofsted, arguing that its current approach prioritizes testing over meaningful learning.

Addressing the Cost of Living Crisis

In his speech, Polanski painted a bleak picture of modern Britain, linking the cost of living crisis to the challenges faced by schools. He described how many children come to school tired and hungry, unable to concentrate or learn effectively. He criticized the lack of support for families, citing cases where children miss school because they cannot afford bus fares.

To address these issues, Polanski proposed measures such as rent controls and bringing water back into public hands. These policies aim to alleviate the financial burden on families and improve the conditions in which children can learn.

A Shift in Union Relations

Polanski’s appearance at the NEU conference comes at a time when the union has developed a more critical stance toward Labour. Following Labour’s recent election victory, the NEU accused the party of underfunding schools. This contrasts with the 2019 conference, where then-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn received a standing ovation.

In response, a Labour spokesman defended the party’s efforts, highlighting initiatives such as free breakfast clubs, expanded free school meals, and childcare reforms. They also pointed to progress in teacher recruitment and reducing child poverty through policy changes.
