Politicians Under Fire for Personal Trips Amidst Government Shutdown
A two-week congressional recess has sparked outrage and criticism as photos emerged of several lawmakers enjoying personal trips while vital government departments, including Homeland Security, remain unfunded. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown has had tangible impacts, most notably leading to significant delays and long queues at airports across the nation, as TSA officers and other essential personnel were forced to work without pay for an extended period.
Among the most widely ridiculed is Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. TMZ published photographs of the South Carolina senator seemingly enjoying himself at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The images captured Graham in various park settings, including walking through the “Tangled” themed area of Magic Kingdom with a pink bubble wand, dining at Chef Mickey’s, and queuing for the Space Mountain rollercoaster. One report noted that he appeared to be in business attire while holding the bubble wand, and later in more casual wear for the theme park rides.
Senator Graham has since defended his impromptu vacation, explaining to TMZ that he was visiting friends in the theme park. He stated that he had been in South Florida earlier that day, engaging in discussions with Trump official Steve Witkoff and others about the potential for normalisation of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. Graham also pointed to his voting record, asserting he had voted seven times to fully fund the government and suggesting that Democrats were the ones blocking legislation. He indicated he had returned to his home state by Sunday and had further engagements scheduled there for the week.
However, the images of Graham at Disney World, juxtaposed with the ongoing government shutdown and its effects, have inflamed public frustration. Many citizens are incensed that lawmakers are taking a break while essential services are underfunded and federal workers are going without pay. The shutdown has particularly impacted airport security, with TSA officers among those affected by the lack of funding. While an executive order from President Donald Trump eventually addressed TSA worker pay amid record-long wait times, other DHS-related employees continue to face financial uncertainty.
Conservative commentators were quick to condemn Senator Graham’s actions. Matt Walsh, Alex Jones, and Tucker Carlson were prominent voices in the criticism. Walsh took to X (formerly Twitter), writing, “While our country is at war, our airports are a mess, DHS is not funded, and our elections are not secure, Lindsey Graham is wandering around Disney World with a bubble wand. This is an image that should live in infamy.” The Tucker Carlson Network also commented on X, posting, “Israel First, Disney World second….” Paul Dans, a Republican candidate challenging Graham in South Carolina, expressed his dismay, stating on X, “The Government is shut down, and the SAVE act isn’t passed, while Peter Pan Lady Graham plays at Disney but even more insulting is American Soldiers are dying in a war he is the face of while he does whatever the hell this is.”
The controversy surrounding Senator Graham is not an isolated incident. Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia of California also faced scrutiny after TMZ released photos of him in a Las Vegas casino. Garcia later clarified that he was visiting his father, who resides in Las Vegas. He acknowledged the situation on X, stating, “Actually I don’t mind what TMZ is doing here. And like I said a few days ago, Speaker Mike Johnson should have never sent us all home.”
Lawmakers from both major parties have engaged in a blame game regarding the DHS shutdown. The impasse stems from disagreements over how to allocate funds for the department and the inclusion of enhanced accountability measures for immigration enforcement officers.
Other lawmakers have also been spotted away from Washington D.C. during the recess. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders was seen on a flight departing the capital. Over the weekend, he participated in a “No Kings” rally in St. Paul, Minnesota, and later delivered a speech at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York.

Republican Rep. Buddy Carter of Georgia was reportedly seen at an airport in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday. A representative for Carter informed TMZ that the lawmaker was travelling to attend his 10-year-old grandson’s baseball game.
The ongoing DHS shutdown and the apparent personal excursions of elected officials during this critical period have highlighted a broader public concern about the priorities and responsibilities of those in power. As the nation grapples with the consequences of government inaction, the actions of these lawmakers have underscored the deep divisions and frustrations felt by many citizens.
