Albanese Speaks Out on Trump’s Hormuz Threat

Australia’s Stance on US Blockade of Strait of Hormuz

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that the United States has not sought Australia’s assistance in blocking the Strait of Hormuz. This comes after former US President Donald Trump announced a sweeping blockade of the critical oil chokepoint following the collapse of peace talks with Iran.

The blockade is set to take effect from midnight AEST. On his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.”

Albanese clarified that Australia will not be joining the US in this blockade. He emphasized that the decision was made unilaterally by the US, with no prior consultation. “We’ve received no requests … they’ve made this announcement overnight and they’ve done that in a unilateral way,” he said during an appearance on Nine’s Today Show.

“We haven’t been asked, and I don’t expect that we will be.” The Prime Minister also highlighted that Australia has not been asked to assist in the ongoing Middle East conflict, despite being listed among US allies for their lack of support.

Focus on Diplomacy Over Military Action

Albanese pointed out that the US had requested support for Gulf countries, particularly the UAE, which led to the deployment of Australian Wedgetail aircraft. “They’ve provided important defensive capacity for people who aren’t participants in this conflict but have been victims of it,” he said.

He extended the deployment of these aircraft for an additional four weeks, emphasizing their role in supporting regional stability. However, he reiterated the need for diplomatic solutions to the conflict. “What we want is for negotiations to resume,” he said.

The Prime Minister stressed the global economic impact of the conflict, noting that it has led to significant disruptions in trade and increased inflation. “This is having a massive global economic impact, not just on Australia. Every single country is being impacted,” he explained.

Impact on Global Markets and Daily Life

Albanese highlighted the effects of the conflict on countries such as the Philippines and Sri Lanka, where fuel shortages have led to four-day work weeks. “We want to see sensible solutions going forward because of the impact that it’s having,” he added.

Resources Minister Madeleine King echoed these concerns, stating that the American blockade poses a challenge to international trade at a time when de-escalation is essential. “That poses a very difficult position for global trade,” she told ABC’s AM Breakfast. “Really, the best thing Australia can do is encourage that both parties go back to the negotiating table.”

Environment Minister Murray Watt also expressed concerns about the potential for further escalation. “We think that any action that anyone takes that risks escalating this conflict is a bad thing for the world,” he said. “We’ve already seen thousands of lives lost throughout this conflict, not to mention, of course, the very real pain that it’s imposing on Australian consumers and right around the world.”
