ASX 200: Tuesday’s Must-Watch Stocks

ASX 200: Tuesday’s Must-Watch Stocks

The Australian share market kicked off the week on a downbeat note, with the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO) experiencing a decline of 0.65% to close at 8,461 points on Monday. Investors will be keenly watching several key indicators and company-specific news to gauge whether the market can stage a comeback on Tuesday. Here are five crucial factors shaping the trading session.

ASX 200 Poised for a Modest Opening

Following a sluggish start to the week on Wall Street, the Australian share market is anticipating a subdued trading session on Tuesday. Current SPI futures suggest the ASX 200 is set to open just 1 point higher. The sentiment on Wall Street was mixed in late trade, with the Dow Jones showing a fractional increase, while the S&P 500 dipped by 0.5% and the Nasdaq saw a more significant drop of 0.9%. This cautious global backdrop indicates that Australian investors may adopt a wait-and-see approach.

Energy Shares Could Shine on Rising Oil Prices

The energy sector on the ASX 200 might be in for a positive session, buoyed by a substantial overnight surge in oil prices. Major players like Karoon Energy Ltd (ASX: KAR) and Santos Ltd (ASX: STO) could see increased investor interest. According to Bloomberg data, the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price climbed by 4.35% to US$103.96 a barrel, while Brent crude oil also saw a healthy increase of 1.25%, reaching US$113.98 a barrel. These figures put oil prices on track for a record monthly surge, driven by a confluence of geopolitical factors and supply concerns, which typically translates to better earnings prospects for oil and gas producers.

Stocks Going Ex-Dividend May Face Downward Pressure

A number of companies on the ASX are scheduled to trade ex-dividend this morning, a development that could lead to a dip in their share prices. This is a standard market mechanism where shares trading on or after the ex-dividend date do not carry the right to the upcoming dividend payment, leading to a price adjustment. Among the stocks to watch are Cromwell Property Group (ASX: CMW), GenusPlus Group Ltd (ASX: GNP), Maas Group Holdings Ltd (ASX: MGH), and New Hope Corporation Ltd (ASX: NHC). Notably, New Hope Corporation is set to pay its shareholders a fully franked dividend of 10 cents per share on April 20th, a factor that may influence its trading behaviour in the short term.

Gold Prices Edge Higher, Boosting Miners

Gold mining stocks on the ASX 200, such as Evolution Mining Ltd (ASX: EVN) and Ramelius Resources Ltd (ASX: RMS), might experience a relatively positive trading day. The price of gold saw a slight increase overnight, with gold futures rising by 0.1% to US$4,494.7 per ounce, as reported by CNBC. This uptick in gold prices is largely attributed to an increased demand for safe-haven assets. In times of economic uncertainty or geopolitical tension, gold is often viewed as a reliable store of value, prompting investors to flock to it, which in turn benefits gold producers.

Strike Energy Ltd Receives a “Buy” Rating

Investment analysts at Bell Potter have identified Strike Energy Ltd (ASX: STX) as a speculative buy, setting a price target of 15 cents. This target suggests a potential upside of over 40% for investors from the current share price. The positive outlook is underpinned by a recent announcement from Strike Energy regarding the Western Australian Economic Regulation Authority’s final determination for the Benchmark Reserve Capacity Price.

The authority set the price for the 2028/29 capacity year at $488,500 per megawatt per year. Bell Potter’s analysis indicates that this pricing could significantly bolster revenues from Strike Energy’s South Erregulla project, potentially generating around $42 million annually, even before accounting for electricity sales. This development highlights the company’s strategic positioning and future revenue potential, making its shares an attractive proposition for speculative investors.
