Jill Duggar has shared a deeply personal and unsettling account of her childhood, revealing the intense fear she experienced during what she describes as “terrifying” nights. This revelation comes as her brother Joseph Duggar faces legal consequences for alleged child molestation.
In her book Counting the Cost, released in September 2023, Jill, now 34, described how strangers would visit their home at unexpected times to check that doors were locked and that everyone was in the correct place. She wrote about the unsettling presence of these individuals who claimed to be ensuring the safety of the family’s children.

This situation reportedly began after her older brother Josh Duggar confessed to molesting her and several of their sisters when he was a teenager. According to Jill, this led to an increased sense of surveillance around the Duggar family compound in Tontitown, Arkansas. The family was under the watchful eyes of people who claimed to be protecting the female children by keeping them behind locked doors.

The details from Jill’s book sparked a strong reaction on social media, with many users criticising her parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar. One user commented, “They should have taken more steps to protect them, like education, teaching girls to speak up, telling boys it’s wrong to touch people, not making girls feel responsible for stirring up feelings in men/boys.” Another added, “They locked the girls and boys bedrooms. Locked them in. Their way of making sure the boys don’t go molesting their sisters at night.”

Josh Duggar, now 38, was never criminally charged for his actions against his sisters, but he was later convicted in 2021 on federal charges related to child sexual abuse material. More recently, Joseph Duggar, 31, was arrested in Arkansas on March 18 after being accused of sexually abusing a nine-year-old during a 2020 trip to Panama City Beach, Florida. He faced two counts of child sexual abuse and was extradited to Florida, where he entered a “not guilty” plea before being released on bail on March 31.

Jill responded to Joseph’s arrest just one day after the news broke. In a post on the Dillard Family blog on March 19, she expressed shock and heartbreak. “We were shocked yesterday evening to learn of Jill’s brother (Joseph Duggar’s) arrest,” she wrote. “We first learned of anything related to his charges yesterday via a text from a friend who messaged us about the recent media reports of Joseph’s arrest and his alleged confession to molesting a juvenile female in 2020. We are shocked and heartbroken.”
She continued, “We strongly condemn abuse. We support the rule of law and hope that justice will be achieved. Our hearts go out to the innocent juvenile victim of this unspeakable crime and her family,” adding, “We pray God gives her strength, comfort and hope, and that she is able to get all the help and support she needs and deserves in the days ahead.”
