Cop Killer’s Hideout: Rumours Swirl Down Under

Manhunt Ends: Questions Linger Over Seven-Month Evasion

The dramatic end to a seven-month manhunt saw fugitive Dezi Freeman, 56, shot dead by police on a remote property in Thologolong, near Walwa on the Victorian-NSW border. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has sparked intense speculation within the local community about who may have aided Freeman in evading capture for so long.

As law enforcement officers continued to meticulously comb through Freeman’s squalid hiding place, a converted shipping container on a sprawling rural property, the focus has shifted to the network of support, if any, that allowed him to remain at large for 216 days. Police cars and a large white van were a constant presence on the property following the fatal confrontation, with a lone patrol car and two officers maintaining a vigil at the entrance the day after Freeman was killed.

In the small, typically quiet town of Walwa, locals congregated at the general store, the hub of community life, on Tuesday. The air was thick with hushed conversations, residents sharing their theories and anxieties about the events that had unfolded. Whispers circulated about who might have been involved in assisting Freeman and even discussions about the fate of any potential reward money. While most remained tight-lipped, a few names and possibilities were repeatedly mentioned in hushed tones.

Bruce McNamara, a lifelong resident of the Upper Murray region with 72 years of local knowledge, expressed his unease. “It’s the talk of the town,” he told AAP, adding that his “gut feeling” pointed towards someone living “down by the river.” McNamara voiced his concern about the increasing normalisation of the sovereign citizen movement, a group to which Freeman belonged. “I am sure he has been harboured and helped and it’s very concerning,” he stated, reflecting a broader sentiment of apprehension among some residents.

Irvine Gregg, proprietor of the Hillview Oak B&B located approximately 50km from the Thologolong property, highlighted the logistical challenges and potential for clandestine movement in the rugged terrain. He suggested that Freeman likely did not travel on foot for the entirety of his escape. “There’s a few options if you knew the area well, you would know how to get places unobserved,” Gregg commented, underscoring the possibility of insider knowledge being crucial to his evasion.

For Samir Ramzan, the owner of the Walwa General Store, the recent events, while tragic, had brought an unexpected surge in patronage, a welcome change from the usual seasonal quiet. “We had a fire some time ago, and now this. We are back on the map,” he remarked, a pragmatic observation amidst the unfolding drama.

On Tuesday morning, an alpine chill permeated the air, and a dense blanket of fog clung to the mountainous landscape where Freeman had established his makeshift sanctuary within the shipping container. Police offered no updates on their ongoing investigation that day.

However, former hostage negotiator Vincent Hurley shed light on Freeman’s mindset, explaining that surrender was never a likely outcome for a staunch adherent of the sovereign citizen ideology. Freeman was a wanted man in connection with the fatal shootings of Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart-Hottart. These officers were part of a team serving a warrant at Freeman’s residence in Porepunkah in late August, a location roughly 150km from where his life ultimately ended.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed on Monday that officers had been in position for over 24 hours prior to the final confrontation, but he declined to confirm whether a tip-off had led them to Freeman’s hiding spot.

Disturbing footage captured Freeman emerging from the shipping container, his temporary abode, wrapped in a blanket. He then produced a firearm from beneath the fabric and pointed it towards the assembled police officers. The weapon was reportedly taken from one of the murdered officers. It remains unclear whether Freeman discharged the firearm before officers opened fire.

Dr. Hurley elaborated on police procedures in such high-stakes situations, suggesting that extensive surveillance would have been employed to ascertain Freeman’s armament, his physical condition in anticipation of a potential struggle, and the presence of any other individuals before any negotiation attempts were initiated. Aerial images of the fugitive’s rural hideout clearly depicted a heavily armed police “BearCat” vehicle, equipped with a large pole that appeared to be used to breach the container.

The ongoing police investigation is meticulously examining the timeline and methods of Freeman’s 216-day evasion, with a significant focus on the possibility of external assistance. Chief Commissioner Bush had previously stated that Freeman had grown a beard and allowed his hair to grow long after fleeing into the dense bushland following the Porepunkah killings.

State Coroner Liberty Sanger was present at the scene on Monday to formally confirm Freeman’s identity. This process, which involves forensic examination and identification, is expected to take up to 48 hours to complete. The community, meanwhile, continues to grapple with the events and the lingering questions about the extent of help Freeman may have received.
